Sanderson Signs Sizeable Deal with Senators

21-year-old defenseman Jake Sanderson has inked an impressive eight-year contract worth $64.4 million with the Ottawa Senators, reports NHL.com. The deal, which boasts an average annual value of $8.05 million, will officially kick off next season.

Sanderson, who made his mark last season with 32 points (four goals and 28 assists) across 77 games, earned himself a spot on the prestigious NHL All-Rookie Team. The talented defenseman was initially drafted by Ottawa as the fifth overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.

He now joins the ranks of other Senators’ stars, including forwards Tim Stutzle and Brady Tkachuk, along with defenseman Thomas Chabot, who are all committed to the team at least through the 2027-28 season. Notably, Sanderson’s contract includes a 10-team no-trade clause, which will be applicable during the final three seasons.

Pierre Dorion, Ottawa’s General Manager, expressed his confidence in Sanderson’s transition to the professional league. He commended Sanderson for his maturity and ability to handle crucial game minutes with confidence. Dorion believes that Sanderson, an exceptional skater who maintains high standards, possesses the potential to become one of the NHL’s most well-rounded defensemen in the coming years.

Dorion stated, “We’re very pleased to have another significant member of our core group of players under long-term contract.”

Sanderson’s exceptional performance last season is reflected in the records. His 28 assists and 32 points as a rookie defenseman ranked third in Senators’ history, trailing only Andrej Meszaros (29 assists, 39 points in 2005-06) and Karel Rachunek (30 assists, 33 points in 2000-01). Additionally, Sanderson ranked second among all rookies in total ice time (1,687:52), average ice time (21:55), power-play assists (15), and power-play points (17). He also secured the fourth spot in assists and the fifth spot in shots on goal (132).

This lucrative eight-year contract solidifies Sanderson’s place in the Ottawa Senators’ future, and fans can expect great things from this young, talented defenseman.
