NHL BoG Approves Sale of Senators to Andlauer

The NHL Board of Governors has granted unanimous approval for the sale of the Ottawa Senators to Michael Andlauer, reports NHL.com. This significant development in NHL ownership marks a pivotal moment for the franchise. Under this new ownership structure, Andlauer will assume control of the Ottawa Senators’ operations, ushering in a new era for the team.

In this transition, Anna and Olivia Melnyk, the daughters of the late Eugene Melnyk, will retain a 10 percent interest in the franchise through the Melnyk Estate. The Melnyk family had a long-standing connection with the team, and this arrangement ensures their continued involvement in the Senators’ journey.

Andlauer, who previously owned the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs, brings a wealth of experience in hockey ownership to the Senators. Notably, his ownership of the Bulldogs saw the team clinch the Calder Cup in 2007. Additionally, Andlauer’s involvement extended to the NHL, where he became an alternate governor for the Montreal Canadiens.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Andlauer stated, “My family and I are thrilled to officially be a part of Ottawa’s team and the Ottawa-Gatineau community. Thank you to the NHL and the Melnyk family for the opportunity to make this a reality and entrusting me to steward this remarkable franchise into the future.” He also acknowledged his commitment to on- and off-ice success for the National Capital Region.

This transition comes following the passing of Eugene Melnyk in 2022, who had been the owner of the Senators since 2003. During his tenure, the Senators reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007 and the Eastern Conference Final in 2017. However, the team faced challenges in recent years and had not made the playoffs since 2017.

The Senators’ outgoing chairman and governor, Sheldon Plener, extended congratulations to Michael Andlauer, expressing confidence in his passion and dedication to lead the franchise into a bright future. This ownership change signals a new chapter for the Ottawa Senators and their devoted fanbase.
