Braves’ Fried Lands on IL with Blister, NLDS Start Remains Likely

The Atlanta Braves faced a setback as their ace pitcher, Max Fried, landed on the injured list due to a blister issue, according to MLB.com. While this development is concerning, it does not necessarily alter the Braves’ plans for the upcoming National League Division Series (NLDS). Fried’s status as the starting pitcher for Game 1 or Game 2 of the NLDS remains highly probable.

Fried’s placement on the 15-day injured list occurred on Friday morning, prompting the recall of right-hander Darius Vines from Triple-A Gwinnett. Notably, Fried delivered a strong performance with six solid innings in a recent game against the Nationals. However, a recurring blister problem resurfaced during his final inning of play.

Fortunately, the timing of Fried’s injury allows for optimism regarding his availability for the NLDS. The 15-day injured list stint will conclude on October 6, just one day before the NLDS commences. This sets the stage for Fried to potentially take the mound for Game 1 on October 7 or Game 2 on October 9.

Addressing his blister issue, Fried acknowledged its recurrence but remained positive about his postseason prospects, stating, “It’s something that obviously happens often. It’s just more about managing and dealing with it. It’s more of a case by case. But I should be good to go. Playoffs are what’s most important. So whatever is going to get us to that is what we’re going to do.”

While Fried has successfully managed blister problems in the past, this recent occurrence raised concerns. However, the left-hander will receive additional rest and will employ techniques to keep his arm in good shape, such as applying tape to his index finger while throwing.

The Braves are cautiously optimistic that Fried’s blister issue will either subside or become manageable in time for the NLDS. As of now, there is a strong possibility that he will be ready to take the mound for two starts during this pivotal postseason series. With an off-day between the first two NLDS games, both the Game 1 and Game 2 starters will have the opportunity to make a second start with their regular rest.
